Your body is probably feeling like mine this week, especially getting up in complete darkness. Just a little draggy, and the cold weather has made me want to just curl up and snooze. Changes in the timing and duration of natural light can really affect us, so our internal clocks are likely a bit out of whack.
And on top of the time change, many of us may still be suffering from winter’s Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) symptoms. SAD can cause depression, lack of energy, moodiness and hormone disruption…and is caused by reduced daylight and the disruption of our 24-hour clock, our circadian rhythm.
We have all been busier indoors as well, which means less Vitamin D, more energy-sapping blue-light, and even more moodiness!
So what can we do to feel better as winter starts to transition away?
My number one recommendation is to watch the sunrises and sunsets.
My daughters and I are very focused on, “Chasing sunsets” as we call it, trying to catch the sunset each day.
Not only does this get you some extra time in the sun, but it’s a wonderful way to relax and connect with nature.
If you spend a lot of time indoors, either at home or work, get outside when you can…and especially during the weekend – take a long hike or walk and soak up that sun!
