Menopause came to me early - after the tragedy of losing my child, I was further devastated with a diagnosis of premature ovarian failure. Without a doubt, my hormones were a mess, and on top of it all, my beautiful long, thick hair started falling out in clumps. Every day became worse. Maybe you can relate. As you approach menopause, your natural levels of hormones start to change. Around this time, you may notice that your hair has started to thin.
So many of my clients have dealt with this and have been helped by what I am sharing with you here. Inez, one of our Magic Menopause participants shared her story with me recently. She had bags of hair loss and weighed over 240 lbs. After following my recommendations, the hair loss stopped and she has lost over 60 pounds at age 57!
What exactly is going on?
Menopausal hair loss is caused by:
- Increased testosterone in proportion to estrogen and progesterone: In women, this hormone is involved in boosting sex drive and relieving symptoms of menopause.
- Overactive or underactive thyroid: This a group of hormones that controls metabolism, mood, weight, and temperature. Both conditions can push hair into a falling-out phase.
- Excess estrogen or not enough: This hormone is responsible for female sex characteristic and the menstrual cycle, among other duties. It plays a role in awakening hair follicles from their resting stage and signaling them to enter their growth phase.
- Falling levels of progesterone: This hormone is responsible for menstrual cycles and pregnancy. Chronic stress can deplete it, and stress is often a cause of hair loss.
- Increased cortisol: Persistent stress causes the adrenal glands to pump out lots of this stress hormone for extended periods of time. While the adrenal glands are busy churning out extra cortisol, they make less of the hormones that support healthy hair growth. Corstisol also increases the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the very androgenic hormone that causes male pattern baldness. (That’s what happened to me!)
So that’s what is happening. The good news is that you can actually reverse these hormone imbalances and start re-growing your hair again.
While bioidentical hormones can help, especially progesterone, the answer is not solely found in taking hormones. In fact, sometimes it can make it worse if we don’t heal the underlying imbalances. Balance your three master hormones.
To harmonize the hormones listed above, you’ve got to tackle insulin, cortisol, and oxytocin. When these are in sync, so is your estrogen, testosterone, thyroid, and progesterone. Support our thyroid
This begins with hair-friendly minerals such as selenium, iodine, and zinc. Eat two Brazil nuts nightly (which provide approximately 200 micrograms of selenium); oysters because they are rich in zinc; and sushi or seaweed for natural iodine. Supplement with omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants. They boost hair density and reduce the time hair stays in its resting phase, according to a 6-month study of women suffering hair loss, published in 2015 in The Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology.
A special note on zinc supplementation: Zinc supports our thyroid and so many natural processes in our body. Through testing RBC Zinc levels, many of us have suboptimal levels. Zinc supplementation at 60mg per day was really important to my hair recovery as it blocks the enzyme 5⍺-reductase that initiates the conversion from testosterone to DHT.
Avoid an iron deficiency.
A very common condition, (a third of women aged 51-64 are low in iron), this can trigger hair loss, since iron binds to a protein called ferritin that protects against hair loss. Have your doctor check your iron and ferritin levels to see if you need to take an iron supplement (Get your ferritin levels optimal at approximately 50 ng/ml).
