Whether you’re a skincare junkie with a 9-step regime or you consider yourself more of a soap & sunscreen type of gal, there are a few times in your life when it’s necessary to switch up your beauty routine. Your skin is your body’s largest organ and is in charge of protecting your body from harmful environmental elements. Good skincare is key to maintaining your overall health. Give your skin the care it deserves to keep you healthy and help put your best face forward.
One of the biggest factors that affects skin is age. As women get closer to menopause, estrogen production begins to slow down. Estrogen plays an important role in collagen production, so as those levels drop, collagen production slows down.
Collagen is your body’s naturally supportive protein. Think of it like a miracle worker that gives your skin elasticity and firmness. When it decreases, your skin can start to become thin and paper-like. Plus, skin becomes drier with age. This can contribute to wrinkles, redness, and a decrease in that vibrant, youthful glow.
The good news?
The cosmetics market is FLOODED with products promising to take years off your skin.
The bad news?
There is SO MUCH out there and it can be difficult to know what actually works – especially when most products use ingredients that aren’t exactly part of your everyday vocabulary.
But I’m here to help.
While there is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to skincare, I’ve put together a list of a few things that can help you make smart choices when cultivating your beauty routine.
The Good Stuff:
Antioxidants: One thing you can never have too much of in your life is antioxidants. These miracle workers are responsible for protecting your body from free radicals that come from UV rays, pollution, disease, and a poor diet. Your body has its own system of antioxidants, but you can boost your defenses by eating nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables and choosing products that include ingredients like grapeseed extract, vitamin C, and vitamin A.
Glycerin: This natural moisturizer is a favorite ingredient in skin creams. Glycerin might also show up as glycerol or as part of a compound, such as capric triglycerides. These components are humectants, which means they can draw moisture from the air around you to help keep your skin smooth and glowing. Moisture is also super important to protect and soothe from irritation.
Natural Hormones: We know that as we age, our hormone levels shift. Lower estrogen levels can wreak havoc all over the body, and our skin is no exception. Natural progesterone and pregnenolone help restore your skin to its natural, beautiful balance. Even better, these hormones are absorbed through the skin and can help restore balance and regulate your health overall!
Probiotics: You’ve probably heard the cultures in yogurt and probiotic supplements can improve your digestive health. Turns out, probiotics can also work wonders for your skin. Stress, diet, and health issues can throw off the balance of the microbes on your skin and cause dryness, acne, or infections. Look for ingredients like bifidobacterium or lactobacillus to make sure your skin is feeling its best and up to the important task of protecting your body.
Peptides: This one is a bit confusing because there are A LOT of different kinds of peptides. These are all strings of amino acids that are the building blocks of proteins. The reason we hear so much about peptides in the beauty world is because they can help nudge your skin to build more collagen and elastin. These proteins are responsible for keeping your skin smooth and supple and can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
The Not-So-Good Stuff:
Unfortunately, because the cosmetics industry is not regulated1, beauty products can be filled with all kinds of junk. Some of these ingredients may cause simple irritation, but some have even been linked to cancer-causing agents, particularly breast cancer2.
A few of these scary synthetic ingredients to watch out for include parabens, words like “fragrance” and “parfum”, sulfates, and phthalates. These additives may be considered carcinogenic or endocrine disruptors and can potentially cause anything from irritation and allergic reactions to serious hormonal disorders and cancer3.
I recommend choosing products that contain as many natural ingredients as possible.
Why?
Your body already has to keep up with hormonal changes, on top of fighting outside elements from pollution, UV rays, and other environmental toxins. Try to avoid adding any more unfamiliar chemicals to the mix wherever possible.
Finding the BALANCE
As women reach new stages of life, our bodies have a LOT to contend with. Hot flashes, weight gain, skin changes. It’s no wonder you begin to feel a bit off-kilter with age. I know I did!
This is why I decided to create my dream cream.
