The Truth About Keto And Menopause: How To Do It The Right Way

You've been eating the same way for years, maybe even less than before, yet somehow your body has decided to redistribute everything to your midsection. Your hot flashes strike at the most inopportune times, and some days, you find yourself struggling to find a simple word. If this sounds familiar, I need to introduce you to my secret weapon: keto for menopause.

More specifically, I need you to meet my signature way of eating called the Keto-Green® diet.

This is keto with an energy-restoring, healthy twist that has changed the lives of thousands of women (including mine).

It’s not about butter and bacon.

It’s about veggies.

And before you ask, “Wait, aren’t veggies carbs and therefore off limits on a keto diet?” I have to explain why veggies are so important (spolier: it’s the alkalinity) and why keto is the best diet for menopause and perimenopause weight loss.

Insulin Resistance And Menopause

Your menopause symptoms may seem unconnected, but the brain fog that makes you forget your neighbor's name, the hot flashes that turn you into a human furnace, and the stubborn weight that clings to your middle like a life preserver — they all share a common root cause.

Insulin resistance.

Research consistently shows that insulin resistance increases significantly during the menopause transition, with studies finding that postmenopausal women have markedly higher rates of insulin resistance compared to premenopausal women. (1,2)

The decline in estrogen, one of your body's key metabolic protectors, leaves you vulnerable to insulin resistance, yet most doctors never mention this connection. (3)

During your reproductive years, estrogen acted like a metabolic bodyguard, helping your cells stay sensitive to insulin and efficiently process the food you eat into energy. But as estrogen levels decline during menopause, that protection disappears. Your cells become increasingly resistant to insulin's signals, kind of like a teenager ignoring their parents' texts.

When your cells stop responding properly to insulin, everything goes haywire. Your body starts pumping out more and more insulin, trying to get the message through and get glucose into your cells…but it doesn’t work, so the glucose backs back into the bloodstream.

This causes a cascade of symptoms.

Signs Of Insulin Resistance In Menopause

Think of insulin resistance as a metabolic traffic jam. When insulin can't do its job properly, glucose builds up in your bloodstream instead of entering your cells for energy.

Your body interprets this cellular energy crisis as stress, triggering a whole host of compensatory mechanisms that manifest as your most frustrating symptoms.

  • Brain Fog: Your brain is an energy hog, consuming about 20% of your body's glucose. When insulin resistance prevents glucose from efficiently fueling your brain cells, you experience the mental cloudiness, forgetfulness, and difficulty concentrating that make you feel like you're operating at low capacity. It's not your imagination. Your brain is literally running on fumes.

  • Hot Flashes: Insulin resistance triggers inflammatory responses and disrupts your body's temperature regulation center in the hypothalamus, the same area affected by dropping estrogen. It's like having two troublemakers in the control room, randomly cranking up your internal thermostat. Research shows that women with higher insulin levels experience more frequent and severe hot flashes. Coincidence? Absolutely not.

  • Weight Gain: This one's particularly cruel. Insulin is your body's fat storage hormone. When insulin levels remain chronically elevated due to resistance, your body stays in storage mode, particularly around your midsection. Even worse, this abdominal fat is metabolically active, producing inflammatory compounds that worsen insulin resistance. It's a vicious cycle that no amount of salad-eating or treadmill-walking seems to break.

Keto Diet For Menopause

Now, imagine if instead of fighting against your body's changing metabolism, you could work with it. Imagine waking up with mental clarity you haven't felt in years, going through entire days without a single hot flash, and watching your body naturally release that stubborn weight without feeling deprived or hungry.

This is what can happen when you address the root cause instead of chasing symptoms.

The ketogenic approach works by fundamentally shifting how your body produces and uses energy. Instead of relying on glucose (and therefore insulin) as your primary fuel source, you train your body to run on ketones — a cleaner, more efficient fuel that your brain absolutely loves.

Here's why this matters for menopause: when you reduce your carbohydrate intake and increase healthy fats, you essentially take insulin out of the equation

>> Your insulin levels drop, your cells regain their sensitivity, and suddenly, that metabolic traffic jam clears.

Does Keto Work For Menopause Weight Gain?

Let me paint you a picture of what this looks like in real life.

In my signature Keto-Green 16-day challenge, I work with women from all over the world to try out a quick ketogenic reset and “clear the traffic jam” of insulin resistance.

Just a few of the stories from the last round of this we held include:

  • Sarah, a 52-year-old marketing director, noticed her 3 PM brain fog lifting. "It was like someone cleaned my mental windshield," she told me. "I could suddenly remember why I walked into a room again."

This happens because ketones provide a steady, efficient fuel source for your brain, eliminating the glucose rollercoaster that contributes to cognitive dysfunction.

  • Maria, 48, realized she'd gone three full days without a hot flash. Then a week. Then two weeks. As her insulin levels stabilized and inflammation decreased, her body's temperature regulation system came back online. "I actually forgot to pack my portable fan for a business trip," she laughed. "That thing had been my constant companion for two years."

Your body isn’t stuck in permanent “hot flash” mode, it’s just trying desperately to combat insulin resistance.

  • Jennifer, 54, had to buy new jeans a size smaller. But here's what really got her: "It wasn't just the weight loss. My shape changed. That inner tube around my middle just... deflated."

When insulin levels normalize, your body finally gets permission to release stored fat, particularly the metabolically active fat around your midsection.

Why Keto-Green Is The Ultimate Menopause Keto Diet

Now, I know what you might be thinking. "Great, another restrictive diet to add to the pile of things I've tried."

But here's where keto for menopause differs from every other approach you've attempted: it's not about restricting calories until you're miserable or exercising until you drop.

It's about strategic nourishment that works with your changing hormones, not against them.

When you eat in a way that keeps insulin low and stable, you're not fighting hunger all day. The constant cravings disappear. The energy crashes vanish. You feel satisfied, nourished, and — normal again.

This isn't about eating nothing but bacon and butter (though both can certainly have their place). It's about choosing foods that support your metabolic health: gorgeous salads drizzled with olive oil, salmon with roasted Brussels sprouts, Greek yogurt with berries and nuts, dark chocolate that doesn't spike your blood sugar.

It's about eating real food that makes you feel amazing.

Keto And Menopause

The research supporting keto for menopause symptoms is emerging and promising. While formal studies are still limited, many women report experiencing fewer and less severe hot flashes on a ketogenic diet.

And studies have shown that ketogenic diets can improve cognitive function, including memory and attention, with some improvements seen in as little as 6 weeks. (4)

Most importantly, addressing insulin resistance during menopause through diet and lifestyle changes significantly reduces your risk of developing metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease later in life…setting you up for a vibrant, healthy future.
