I’ve talked about vaginal dryness before, especially how it not only affects you physically but also emotionally and mentally. While vaginal dryness affects mostly menopausal women, it can occur in women of all ages, due to things such as medication, hormone-disrupting exposures, and beauty products.
There are many prescription and over-the-counter treatments available to alleviate the symptoms of vaginal dryness, but there are also many home remedies that work just as well and don’t require a prescription or include potentially toxic chemicals as ingredients.
In this article we explore using natural lubricants to treat your vaginal dryness, simply using ingredients from your kitchen! Don’t worry, these are tried, tested and safe! But first…
Why Does Vaginal Dryness Happen?
The most common reason for vaginal dryness is the natural aging process all women go through. A woman’s ovaries produce many of the sex hormones (especially estrogen), that help keep her vaginal lining healthy and moist.
However, come peri-menopause, the four key sex hormones produced by our ovaries — estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) — start to decline.
This means we are producing less healthy secretions, causing our vaginal lining to shrink, thin, and dry out, becoming less elastic in the process — which leads to irritation, discomfort, and vaginal dryness!
Breastfeeding is also another reason you might have vaginal dryness, as our estrogen production temporarily drops dramatically at this time.
Of course, vaginal dryness can happen to women of all ages, due to the side-effects of medication or treatment, beauty products (soaps, perfumes, douching, bubble baths, detergents), and hormone-disrupting exposures (smoking, eating foods that have hormones, or exposure to toxins).
What To Expect
Many people think that vaginal dryness is just a spot of dryness in your nether region. Well… yes and no. Going by its name, yes, you do get dry down there. But it’s more than that. Vaginal dryness (or vaginal atrophy) can include:
- Painful intercourse due to vaginal dryness
- Vulvar-vaginal thinning and irritation
- Increased vaginal and bladder infections (due to decreased normal flora, loss of lactobacilli and increased pH)
- Decreased desire, arousal, and orgasm
These symptoms aren’t exactly a walk in the park. It’s uncomfortable, in many cases it can also cause pain — especially when having intercourse. Not to mention the psychological impact this can have on a personal and relational level.
Vaginal dryness is also a "warning" that other things are coming:
- Leaking urine or incontinence
- Pelvic prolapse symptoms such as pressure and trouble eliminating
- Increased skin disorders affecting the urogenital tract (vulvodynia, vestibulitis, hypertrophic dystrophy, dermatitis)
Why Go Natural?
I’m not against prescription medication, not at all. But I always say, “Do the natural stuff first!” — unless you’re in a really bad state, in which case, always see your doctor! But when you stabilize and are feeling better, try and go back to natural.

Natural Lubricants From Your Kitchen
The first item on my list is Ghee. Ghee is clarified butter, that is mostly used in South Asian cooking, as well as in Ayurvedic practice because of its nutritional and medicinal properties.
Since it doesn’t burn unless heated excessively, it makes a great body oil for massages and can serve as a base for ointments. There are two ways to use ghee for vaginal dryness, one is orally and the other topically.
Orally, ghee is mixed with a herb called Shatavari (asparagus racemosus) to create a mixture that is taken daily. Shatavari ghee contains healthy fatty acids, including Omega 3 and 9. Additionally, as a side benefit, it has Linoleic Acid, vitamins A, D, and K, detoxifies the body by flushing excess bile from the liver, boosting metabolism and stabilizing your mood and energy level.
How to use:
Massage a tiny dollop of ghee onto your vaginal area, or if you can get your hands on Shatavari ghee (you might be able to find this traditional Ayurvedic Ghee in some health stores), take a tablespoon orally daily.
I find olive oil especially great as a lubricant because you can apply it topically without worrying that it will disrupt the vaginal microbiota.
How to use:
Just massage a teaspoon inside your vagina twice a day to see results.
By now we know just how beneficial aloe vera is for our skin — especially when you’re burnt from being out in the sun too long. Aloe’s hydrating compounds reduce irritation and itching while promoting the production of natural lubricants.
If you’re someone who is prone to infections, aloe vera is also an anti-inflammatory and an antibiotic, making it an excellent product to apply.
How to use:
If you’re using fresh aloe, break a piece off and cut through the outer layer of the plant (or the ‘skin’ of the plant). Apply the gel from inside directly onto the dry or inflamed parts of the vagina. You can also add a drop or two of tea tree oil to the gel, and apply that mixture to your vagina, twice a day.
Sea Buckthorn Oil
Sea buckthorn oil is quite easy to find in any health food store and is taken orally. It has been found to help with mucosal integrity within the vagina which in turn reduces vaginal dryness and irritation.
How to use:
Sea buckthorn oil is to be consumed orally. Follow the instructions on the label.
I love adding a few drops of essential oils to my lubricants! Tea tree oil and chamomile especially are also known to help with vaginal dryness, itching, and discharge.
It’s important to note, that all essential oils must only be used with a carrier oil and never directly onto your vagina. In fact, test the oil first on your inner arm to make sure it doesn’t irritate you.
How to use:
Add one to two drops to a carrier oil like olive oil or with aloe vera gel and apply the mixture to your vagina.
And finally, my favorite lubricant — coconut oil!
Coconut oil has become a “miracle cure” for so many things, that it’s easy to dismiss it as yet another magical-snake-oil — and I would have done so as well, had I not read up on the research!
Coconut oil is a wonderful lubricant as it restores the skin’s barrier function, which helps to reduce vaginal dryness symptoms such as itchiness, burning pain and of course, dryness.
Mix coconut oil with a few drops of Vitamin E and you have yourself a power-packed lubricant!
How to use:
A little goes a long way, so apply a dab inside the edge and outside the entrance of the vagina daily, as well as applying before sex.
Things to note: Do not use coconut oil as a lubricant if you’re using condoms. Coconut oil may damage the condom, putting you at risk of pregnancy or an STD.
In The Long Run
At the end of the day, if your vaginal dryness is a caused by natural aging (aka going through menopause) or hormone imbalances, applying lubricant is merely a temporary relief.
Estrogen used to be a common treatment to "everything menopause", although it comes with side-effects and research is mixed on how well it solves vaginal dryness for many women. In my years of clinical practice and as a researcher I looked for a safer, more effective solution.
